Harvard Affiliated Hospital Loses 150 Brains for Research or, is this Just Another Case of Freezer Burn?

150 brains of people afflicted with Autism, Parkinson’s Disease, Neurological conditions and Schizophrenia have rotted because a freezer lost power at the facility. The alarm that should have sounded did not. It was 3 days before anyone noticed the decomposing tissues.

A Harvard -Affiliated Hospital Loses 150 Brains for Research or is this Just Another Case of "Freezer Burn?"

Difficult to determine exactly why the Harvard refrigerator just suddenly stopped working?

Dr. Francine Benes, director of the Harvard Brain Tissue Resource Center told the newspaper, “This was a priceless collection. You can’t express its value in dollar amounts.”

The loss of the brain tissue could set back autism research by a decade, according to Carlos Pardo, associate professor of neurology at Johns Hopkins University.

He said the brains, “yield very, very important information that allows us to have a better understanding of what autism is, as well as the contribution of environmental and immune factors.”

The freezer was thought to have failed three days before it was discovered, but alarms failed to trigger and an external thermostat gave the incorrect temperature.

It contained 150 brain samples from people who had neurological conditions including autism, Parkinson’s disease and schizophrenia. Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2012/06/11/freezer-malfunction-at-harvard-hospital-damages-150-brains-used-to-study-autism/#ixzz1xmhZt4wE

At the same time that the Department of Health discovered that up to 75% of vaccines were stored improperly, kept too hot or too cold or were expired rendering them useless or unsafe, the Harvard affiliated hospital  fails to keep it’s equipment in good working order.

Somehow I feel uncomfortable with this story. Hospitals are known for having backup generators and strong alarms. Harvard affiliates are well versed in the  study of electricity and wall outlets, refrigerators and freon. If we can not create the proper research on the large numbers of explosive Autism in kids under age 18, and we can not control the environment in our science labs, then how can we pretend to safely inject aluminum, thimerosal, antifreeze, embalming fluids and the like in order to make our children well? We can not even control a science lab in one of our best institutions, then how can we claim that we are keeping kids safe while the numbers of chronic illness continue to climb?
