If you are suffering from type 2 diabetes, researchers are now suggesting that patients choosing naturopathy treatments for diabetes along with standard mainstream medical care can experience “many positive benefits.” Here’s an article by Dr Victor Marchione found at The Doctors Health Press that contains information on this recent diabetes study:
Study Concludes: Naturopathy Treatments for Type 2 Diabetes- Beneficial
The findings show that complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) may have several positive effects on people with type 2 diabetes. That is a pretty important revelation for nearly 26 million American diabetics.
It is encouraging news for those fighting the disease. Patients in the study cited the benefits of trying different approaches to find the best ways to minimize the effects of type 2 diabetes. Forty of them received counseling on diet, exercise, and glucose monitoring from four naturopathic physicians — in addition to conventional diabetes care from their doctors (drugs included).
Many participants also received stress-management care and dietary supplements. Researchers then compared these 40 participants with 329 patients receiving only conventional diabetes care.
In six months and about four naturopathic treatment visits, participants demonstrated improved self-care, more consistent monitoring of glucose, and improved moods. Hemoglobin A1c rates (a measure of blood-sugar control) were nearly a full percentage point lower for those patients. This compares with a drop of only 0.5% over the same time period for 329 similar patients receiving only conventional diabetes care.
Finding more effective ways of treating type 2 diabetes is important, because it is one of the top-10 causes of death in Americans and is costly to treat: $1.00 out of every $10.00 spent on healthcare in the U.S. is used to fight type 2 diabetes, at a cost of $178 billion every year. The diet as you may know, is of key importance due to the fact that type 2 diabetes is not insulin dependent. Further studies and evidence of the benefit of naturopathy treatments for diabetes are explained here:
Dr. Mona Morstein, Chair of Nutrition at SCNM and Supervising Physician at Southwest Naturopathic Medical Center, the out-patient medical clinic of the medical school has found significant results and benefits from a naturopathic treatment regimen for diabetes through a comprehensive, yet individualized course of treatment for her diabetic patients, no matter which type of diabetes they have.
Part of that treatment includes a low carbohydrate diet. A great deal of evidence-based research supports the use of such a dietary program, even though it is contrary to what the ADA suggests. Dr. Morstein also prescribes various nutrients and anti-oxidants as a result of medical studies having shown thatdiabeticsare lacking in a number of vital nutrients. Further, the research has shown that the problematic progression of their diabetes is considerably slowed by antioxidants. Dr. Morstein uses various botanical medicines to help decrease insulin resistance and sugar cravings, which has the added benefit of aiding in weight loss. Treatment can also include diagnosing and addressing imbalances in other hormones such as cortisol and testosterone. Aerobic exercise and weight lifting are necessary for the patient to regularly engage in and, if need be, stress relaxation and counseling become part of the overall regimen.
The naturopathic treatment regimen has shown other significant benefits, with the reduction and oftentimes elimination of oral hypoglycemics and blood pressure medicines as patients become healthier. For those Type I diabetics that require insulin, a unique way of prescribing the insulin is prescribed which enables the blood sugar levels to be very tightly controlled without causing frightening low blood sugar episodes.More here:
